Hatha or vinyasa: which is for you?

One of the questions I get asked most is "what's the difference between hatha and vinyasa?" They share most of the same postures. The big difference is the pace.

Hatha: one pose at a time

In a hatha class we move into a pose, hold it for several breaths, then come out and rest before the next one. There's time to get the shape right, adjust it for your body and really feel what's happening. It's steady, grounding and great for building strength and flexibility.

Vinyasa: a flow with the breath

In vinyasa we link poses together, moving on each inhale and exhale. It feels more like a dance, and it warms you up quickly. It's energising and good for fitness and focus, though there's less time to settle into each pose.

So which should I try?

  • Brand new to yoga? Start with hatha. You'll learn the poses properly, which makes vinyasa much easier later.
  • Like to keep moving? Try vinyasa. I always give simpler options.
  • Feeling frazzled? Neither, perhaps. Try restorative for some proper rest.

The good news is you don't have to choose for ever. Lots of people do both: vinyasa when they want energy, hatha when they want to slow down.
