Beginners Hatha Yoga

Hatha is yoga at a steady pace. We take each posture one at a time, hold it for a few breaths and build the shape with care. It's the best place to start, and a lovely way to keep your practice grounded.

What is hatha?

The foundation of most yoga

Hatha is a traditional style that combines postures (asana), breathing (pranayama) and relaxation. Most modern styles grew out of it. Because the pace is slower, there's time to learn how each pose works, find the version that suits your body and notice how it feels.

In a class

What to expect

  • Arrive and settle: a few minutes of breathing to leave the day behind.
  • Warm up: gentle movement for the spine, hips and shoulders.
  • Standing poses: strength and balance, held for 5 to 10 breaths.
  • Floor work: seated stretches, twists and gentle backbends.
  • Relaxation: 5 to 10 minutes lying down at the end.

Is it for me?

  • You're new to yoga or coming back after a break
  • You'd like to understand the poses properly
  • You prefer a steady pace to a fast flow
  • You're managing stiffness or a desk-bound week
Questions

Common questions

I'm not flexible. Can I still come?
Yes. Flexibility comes from practising, not before it. Every pose has options and props.

Is it hard work?
It's steady rather than sweaty. You'll feel your muscles working, and you'll leave feeling relaxed.

How often should I come?
Once a week is a great start. You'll notice a difference within a few weeks.
